On Sunday last I finally succumbed to the dark side an Apple iPad. I eventually managed to justify the spend to myself, albeit on the 16GB version, with 4G (though even when 4G is released in the UK it will be a while after that before the networks actually support it on the iPad).
This justification also extends to actually using the thing for productive means other than reading Manga on it, or watching HD content on that beautiful Retina display, or watching Formula 1 on it courtesy of Sky Go, or…well you get the idea.
The good news is there are a wealth of apps that make IT Managers, System Admins and DBAs lives a whole lot easier when they are on the move. How many times have you been rung in the middle of a supermarket, or on a long car journey, or at the football with people screaming for help because the server needs to be rebooted, or mail has stopped flowing, or the EDI doesn’t work and you can’t do anything about it because you are several miles or hours from home?
So, you just bought a shiny new tablet, or you want to convince your boss you need one so you can be the all day and all night Meerkat from a certain well known website ad, what can you put on it that’s actually of any use?
First up, RDP Client, for which iTap RDP I found to be just about as good as it gets. Gesture control, mouse control that is startlingly accurate, plus it is connection sensitive – if the app can see the server, it lights it up green on the Bookmark list – rather handy and avoids hitting the connect button in hope that it will eventually connect.
There are plenty of free RDP clients out there, but iTap is definitely worth its £7.99 price tag if you have a raft of servers to administer.
Secondly, for Remote Controlling PCs, the Logmein Client is Free, and the interface is a joy, possibly even better than the PC version. It’s a great addition to a product that’s been around a while and makes you feel this was what they intended all along. Your MD’s PC is in need and you’re out and about, no problem.
VMWare have a VSphere client which is also free, allowing you to control and restart your VMs from your slate.
Fing is a good network and Port scanner. Scan a large network, or simply regain control over your home wireless.
DBAs get in on the act with impathic’s range of DB Clients, for Oracle, MySQL, Access, and of course, close to my heart, SQL Server. Tables present in a nice Excel-style format which are easy on the eye in the full Retina display. The app includes a handy query builder, which allows the novice to build up queries in a simple fashion, or to enter a custom query themselves. It could use some more support around Functions, Views, and Stored Procedures, but it is definitely grown up enough to count as a nice mobile substitute for SSMS.
Last but not least is one I have mentioned before, Mobi SSRS for SQL Server Reporting Services, still the best client interface for this I can find, its simple and easy to use.
There are numerous DNS Lookup clients on the AppStore as well, making the iPad now a serious proposition for the IT Professional on the move.
If you have any more gems then please leave a comment as great apps travel by word of mouth (or word of installs!).
